WHY WE MUST ACT COLLECTIVELY NOW

We are living in extraordinary times – times with depleting natural resources, over consumption of everything, and pollution that has infiltrated our land, water and air.

Land

We have so much unbiodegradable plastic in our landfills that we are running out of land in which to place the growing mountain of waste. We are cutting down trees at rates they can’t be replaced and devastating the natural habitats of millions of animal species, many of whom face extinction as a direct result.

Water

We’ve turned to dumping plastic into our oceans and seas, so much so that plastics dumped in one side of the world are being washed ashore on far-flung beaches on the other side. Our oceans are now so full of plastic, it’s worked its way into the human food chain, and now everybody’s DNA contains plastic. We’ve polluted the waterways with chemicals such that the mercury content of most fish makes them unsafe for human consumption. And as ocean vapours form and release from clouds, the cycle of contamination continues back to land in a continuous loop.

Air

We are polluting our air with exhaust fumes from vehicles and trapping it within our atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse gas effect. The global population explosion and the resulting demand for meat has lead to a high volume of cattle adding methane to the atmosphere. Efforts to reduce our carbon footprint are not taking place fast enough. Our air is so polluted in many cities that we are seeing unprecedented numbers of asthma and other respiratory diseases.

What legacy are we leaving?

It all has to stop – for our own future and for our children’s and grandchildren’s futures, for it is they that will inherit “our Earth”.

When your grandchildren ask you what you did to save or destroy the world, what will you be able to tell them? What legacy will you leave?
